Russell E. Smith, Sr., 86, of Vineland, NJ passed away on Thursday afternoon in the SJH Reg. Med. Ctr. after a brief illness. Mr. Smith was born and raised in Vineland where he was a lifelong city resident. He was the son of the late Ruth (Bell) & Warren A. Smith. Mr. Smith retired as a Rural Letter Carrier from the United States Postal Service serving in the Vineland Post Office. Prior to and after his military service Mr. Smith also was employed as the Assistant Manager at the Landis Theatre. He had also been employed as an egg inspector for the Vineland Egg Auction. Prior to W.W. II he was a member of the Headquarter Co., N.J. National Guard 157th Field Artillery Unit. Russell enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1943 and served as a Sgt in the 8th & 9th Air Forces in the European Theatre of Operations. After W.W. II, he along with many other veterans helped organize the 114th Tank Btn., N.J. National Guard in Vineland. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #157 and the National Rural Letter Carriers Assn. After his retirement he enjoyed working as a volunteer at the Newcomb Medical Center and later at the N.J. Veterans Memorial Home.
He is survived by his wife of 61yrs.: Sally (Esposito); three sons, Russell E. Jr. & wife Lyn, Robert W. & wife Maureen, & David G. & wife Jackie; seven grandchildren & nine great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Warren, Allan & William
Relatives & friends will be received at the Pancoast Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon from 1:00-2:00 followed by his memorial funeral service at 2 pm. Burial will be private in the Cumberland County Veterans Cemetery, Hopewell Twp., NJ. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to the N.J. Veterans Memorial Home, 524 N.W.
